Pre-Production is the planning process and execution of every task that must take place before production begins. It usually begins once the script is finished and involves the director, cinematographer, producers, first assistant director, production managers, production coordinators, and location scouts. Every project is different depending on the budget and the size of the production, but there are some relatively universal guidelines to consider.
Production is where the film is created and shot. In this phase, it is key to keep planning ahead of the daily shoot. This is also called principal photography. The primary aim is to stick to the budget and schedule, which requires constant vigilance.
Post-Production is the stage after production when the filming is wrapped and the editing of the visual and audio materials begins. Post-Production refers to all of the tasks associated with cutting raw footage, assembling that footage, adding music, dubbing, sound effects, just to name a few. The Post-Production process is highly collaborative, across a few months to even a year, depending on the size and need of the project.
